Harlin J. Mercier, 87, New Franken, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 20, 2025, after a short stay at Autumn Fields. He was born March 16, 1938, in Green Bay to the late Rudolph E. and Doris M. (DeJardin) Mercier. On August 29, 1959, Harlin married Elizabeth Louise Mathey in Brussels. She preceded him in death June 18, 2007. Harlin graduated from Luxemburg High School. He served in the U.S Army and was proud to be a Veteran and member of the American Legion Ralph Kline Post 262. Harlin farmed his entire life and also worked in construction in Green Bay. After Harlin and Betty married, they bought the family farm in 1964. Harlin was a very devout catholic and a life-long member of St Joseph Parish, Champion. He was proud to have served Our Lady of Champion for over 80 years as an altar server from age six until past his high school years, parking cars, and ringing the bell. Harlin enjoyed Chambers Island Retreats for 58 years. He was very proud of his Belgian heritage and was one of the very few left who could fluently speak the Walloon language. He traveled several times to Belgium and around Europe with friends and even stood up for a wedding while there. He also enjoyed hosting his Belgian friends when they visited America. Harlin was proud to have served on the Town of Green Bay Board for 40 years, Brown County Planning Board for 20 years, as well as serving on the New Franken Fire Department for 25 years. Harlin enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren and taught them well. One of his favorite pastimes was playing a game of cuyoo with his many close friends. He also enjoyed the many breakfasts shared with friends after Mass.
Survivors include his five children, Steve (Sue) Mercier, Kevin (Patti) Mercier, Dennis (Debbie) Mercier, Lori Geniesse (Chris Vandervest), all of New Franken and Lynn Holschuh (Davey Delcore) from Luxemburg; Grandchildren Matt (Jodi), Chad (Liz), Samantha (Taylor), Phill (Chrissy), Joe (Alycia), Kayla (Adam), Brad (special friend Rebecca), David (Jenna), Dan (Natalie), Dylan (Alicia), Alexa, Maia, Grace and Elaina, as well as 20 great-grandchildren with two on the way. Harlin is also survived by one sister, Jeanette (Stan) Dequaine; one brother-in-law, Bill Michiels; two sisters-in-law, Judy Kerscher and Pam (Allen) Vogel; and one brother-in-law Ron (Connie) Mathey; and many close friends.
Harlin was preceded in death by his wife Betty; his parents Rudolph and Doris Mercier; sister Arlene Michiels; brother Galen Mercier; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Verna & Walter Monfils; father-in-law and mother-in-law Cletus and Alta Mathey.
Friends may call at St Joseph Church, Champion, on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, from 3:30 pm - 6:30pm. Closing combined American Legion Ralph Kline Post 262 and Parish Prayer Service with Deacon Bob Miller. Visitation will continue Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 9:00 am - 10:30 am at the church. The funeral mass will take place at 11:00 am with Rev. Patrick Beno officiating. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Champion, with full military rites provided by the American Legion Ralph Kline Post 262 of Luxemburg. McMahon Funeral Home, Luxemburg is assisting the Mercier family.
