Merrill J. Rank

Merrill J. Rank, 89, Luxemburg quietly passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday August 27, 2025. He was born at his home in Luxemburg on July 18, 1936, to Peter and Agnes (Dorner) Rank.

He was a 1954 graduate of Luxemburg High School. Following graduation, he helped on the home farm and then enlisted into the Army in 1956 – 1958. He then bought the family farm and farmed until he retired. On October 31, 1970, he married Susan A. Nell at Immaculate Conception Church in Luxemburg. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish and was a member of the Holy Name Society.

His enjoyments included bowling, which he did for over 50 years, along with playing Sheepshead with family, friends, and neighbors. Most of all he loved farming.

Merrill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan; their four children Julie (Jon) Zirbel, Dennis (Jennifer) Rank, Sarah (Jon) Romdenne, and Karen (Kevin) Tassoul; his daughter-in-law Ann Rank; Grandchildren Hannah, Haley, Molly, Maggie Zirbel, Austin, Evan, McKenna Rank, Elizabeth, Morgan, Dylan Rank, Cody (Brooke), Grace, Jacob Romdenne, Emily, Zach, and Kyle Tassoul; his sisters, Arvilla Rank, Janet (Jim) VanPay, and Sandy Rank; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bonnie (George) Baumann, Shirley Nell, Gladyce Cairns, Russell Nell, Lyle (Jill) Nell, Shelly Nell, and Steve (Carmine) Nell; many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his son Paul Rank; his parents Peter and Agnes Rank; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jeannette and Carl Nell; sister and brothers-in-law, Shirley (Merlin) VandenPlas, Mike Nell, and Doug Nell.

A visitation will take place at the McMahon Funeral Home on Friday, August 29, 2025, from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. A closing prayer will follow at 6:00 pm with Deacon Bob Miller. Visitation will continue Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 9:00 am – 10:30 am at Immaculate Conception Church, Luxemburg. The funeral mass will take place at 11:00 am with Reverend Daniel Schuster officiating. Burial in Immaculate Conception Cemetery with full military rites provided by American Legion Ralph Kline Post 262.
