Richard J. Charles, 98, Luxemburg, was welcomed into heaven on Sunday evening, December 14, 2025, at Autumn Fields Assisted Living. Richard was born on December 9, 1927, in Rosiere to the late Joseph and Mary (DeVos) Charles. Richard married Marie A Hermans at St Martin Catholic Church in Tonet on December 26, 1945. They were married 71 years before Marie's passing.
Richard was a member of St Mary Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Richard proudly served as a Luxemburg volunteer fireman for 45 years. A path that his son, Bruce, and his grandsons Jeremy Charles and Ryan DeBroux, and great grandson Blake DeBroux proudly follow. Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grand, great-grand and great-great grandchildren.
Richard was a life-long Packer fan and a very hard worker, a trait that he passed down to each of his six children. When Dad fixed something, we knew it was fixed well. Richard was a small business owner operating the Luxemburg Milling Company - Flour Division for many years. He also was a truckdriver for Packerland Packing until his retirement.
He is survived by his six children: Shirley Kowaleski, Mishicot; Lyle (Mary) Charles, Pewaukee; Leonard (Judy) Charles, Madison; Rick (Christine) Charles, Dykesville; Terry (Don) DeBroux, Mequon; and Bruce Charles, Luxemburg; fourteen grandchildren, Craig (Kay) Kowaleski, Curt (Lori) Kowaleski, Paula (John) Billos, Adam (Cindy) Charles, Nathan (Jenn) Charles, Jeremy (Crystal) Charles, Jesse (Erin) Charles, Jennifer (Neal) Englebert, Michelle (Fiancé Eric) Charles, Tina (Todd) Erieau, Ryan (Crystal) DeBroux, Renee (Jeremy) Zimmermann, Kristin (Ryan) Kuharske, and Michael (Amber) DeBroux.
Twenty seven great grandchildren: Kelsey (Mike) Ross, Cassandra (Andrew) Cymmer, Zachary (special friend Stephanie) Kowaleski, Allyson (Matt) Terrance; Elena and Michael Billos; Wyatt Charles; Maya and Owen Charles; Duncan and Annabelle Charles; Jurnie and Jasper Englebert; Ariauna Pienta and Jakobi White; Logan and Wyatt Erieau; Marshall, Blake and Chase DeBroux; Cruz, Waverly and Finn Zimmermann; Evelyn and Olivia Kuharske; August, Violet and Dahlia (will be born in January) DeBroux; and six great-great grandchildren, Jackson and Adalyn Ross, Harrison, Cooper and Charlie Terrance and Robin Kowaleski. He is also survived by his in-laws Janet Hermans, New Franken; Veronica and Ted Ploof, Luxemburg; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death is his wife, Marie, his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Philomine Hermans; nine brothers, six sisters, nine brothers-in-law, and twelve sisters-in-law.
Visitation at St. Mary Catholic Church on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 4:00 pm. To 6:00 pm. Closing prayer service at 6:00 pm with Deacon Bob Miller. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, December 20th, between 9:30 am to 10:45 am. Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 am with Very Rev. Daniel Schuster officiating. Dad will be joining Mom at the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum, Green Bay.
Special thanks to the staff at Autumn Fields and all who helped, visited and brought food over the years to Dad in his time of need. A special warm note of thanks is extended to our brother Bruce, spending so much of his time taking care of Mom and Dad's needs all these years!
