Sister Mary Jean Gauthier, OSF, age 96, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross, died on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Grancare Health Care Facility.

The former Jean Iola Gauthier was born on May 26, 1929, in Oconto, WI, daughter of the late Charles and Viola (Marek) Gauthier. She entered the convent in 1953, professed her vows in 1956, and celebrated her 70th Jubilee in 2024.

Sister Mary Jean served as homemaker for the Sisters at Holy Angels, Darboy, St. Mary, Peshtigo, All Saints, Denmark, St. Joseph, Marinette, and St. Isidore, Osman. She served as a cook at the Pre-Novitiate, Robinsonville, and McCormick Home, Green Bay. She did home nursing care in Green Bay, and was a parish minister in Tachi, British Columbia, Canada. She served in Community Service at the Motherhouse from 1993-2019. Her gift of hospitality was there for the people she served in Tachi, for those at Grancare Nursing Home and all of her friends. Her love for the poor was unending as she collected clothes and other items for those most in need – always with a smile.

Survivors include the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross and Associates; nieces: Julie McDowell, Fran (Chris) Sherman, Green Bay, Mary (Gerald) Wojner, Jim Shallow, Oconto, Sharon (Jim) Young, Neenah, Cathy (Bob) De Groot, Phoenix, AZ; nephews, Mark Kirchner, Chris (Lisa) Wanner; cousin, Valerie Feldt; friend Monique Kwan, other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Charles and Viola; sisters: Maybelle Kirchner, Carol Shallow, Laverne Sherman, Ione Wanner; brothers-in-law, Lyle Reed, Mike Wanner, Wes Kirchner, Doug Shallow, Bernard Sherman; nephews, Ken Bostedt, Lucas Shallow.

Visitation for Sister Mary Jean will take place at Holy Cross Church, 3009 Bay Settlement Road, Green Bay on Thursday, August 21, from 9:00 –10:30am. The Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30am followed by burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. McMahon Funeral Home of Luxemburg is assisting with arrangements.
